Being a HR professional I wish to restrict my views related to the employees and employers. We’re experiencing shifts in all facets of our life from family to work and how we socialize. While we discuss about the worst, but we miss to appreciate the positive future which is likely when considering what companies are doing, how employees will work with others, how workplace and technology will change, how companies are/will modify its overall policies, business model and even how we take advantage of career opportunities.

 

Few silver linings during this crisis period are:

 

Employers approach towards employees will change:

Employee wellbeing has been on the top priority for most employers. Many employers have added to employee support systems as a result of the coronavirus crisis, and it is likely this new programming will be maintained. Employers have realized the importance of mental wellbeing, employee engagement and motivation irrespective where the employee works from. In addition, employers have realized the importance of building trust in this time when working from home has been on priority.

 

Leadership Skills will be of utmost priority:

Throughout a crisis, leadership is more important than ever. It is likely these difficult times will filter out leaders who are less stellar. Performance will not be the only yardstick to measure the leaders. Traits which all leaders need to demonstrate will be to retain confidence, remain calm, relentlessly communicate with partners and community, be compassionate, make people comfortable and focus on liquidity. The leaders action will determine the future of the organization in this difficult times. The need of the day will be for leaders to lead by influence not authority and should be purpose driven and not power driven.

 

New workplace dynamics

Many companies have been resistant with to letting employees work from home, but this pandemic has forced companies to see work-from-home as a viable option. The companies realized the usage of technology in conducting important meetings which will also bring down business related travels. Focus will be on accelerating the addition of technology in the workspace. New virtual ways of engagement will find its way. There will be more cohesion as team will comprise of machine employees, freelancers, permanent and temporary workers. We will use the entry of the DIGITAL natives in the workforce. The working environment will become more dynamic.

 

Innovation will flourish:

Crisis is the mother of innovation and creativity. Companies will learn from the requirement for greater innovation and create the conditions for expanded levels of creativity, exploration and problem-solving. Companies will innovate products and services to cater to the vacuum created by this crisis.

 

Career Opportunities & Skills

Specialist and multi-disciplinarian jobs will be on demand. Skills like creativity, collaboration, empathy will gain prominence along with skills like data scientist. This is will be the best time to harness the entrepreneurial skills. Careers need not be viewed as vertical progressions. Acquiring new skills, adding diversity and strengthening the domain skills should be the priority. Timeless skills like Leadership, ambition, creativity and humility will be tested and appreciated.
